A magnificent shop counter unit from the 1950's or even earlier. This 4,4 meter piece is made from solid wood. It is an authentic piece of shopfitting from the shoe and clothing shop, Reject King, which used to be on Salt River circle and recently closed after three generations in the Jacobs family. Like with so many of these old counter and haberdashery pieces, it was made with considerable skill out of a variety of wood types.
The top is two solid slabs of meranti, both running the full length of the counter. On the one side, it has fourteen deep and very large drawers, with glass fronts and original art deco handles. The other long side has shelving, with eight large compartments.
We have restored the counter without altering the patina from the historical wear. All the wood surfaces are sanded and sealed. There is not a single piece of chipboard and veneer in the whole piece. It is all solid wood, with some plywood boards on both ends.
