The MT in the name of the model MT3 chair by Ron Arad, was chosen for its similar pronunciation to the word "empty", refering to the hollowness of the design.
The chair, manufactured by Driade in Italy, is made through the process of rotational monobloc molding (one single casting), and the two colours on the outer shell and the inside, are done through first casting the white polyethelene (white sand-colour) and then the red polyethelene, without merging the two polymers.
The tough material and slight rocking motion makes it the perfect chair for a stoep or courtyard.
Ron Arad is hailed as one of the foremost designers of the late 20th century. He studied art at the Jerusalem Academy of Art and architecture in London under Peter Cook. He is known for his unorthodox combination of concepts and materials.
The model was first designed in 2004 and this chair, with the maker's mark, was bought in 2004.
