* Lucian Ercolani

Ercolani was an Italian furniture maker and designer who emigrated at ten years old with his family to London, in 1898. He learnt his skills in the joinery of the Salvation Army. He founded the Ercol Company in 1920, and supplied the government with tent pegs and bentwood furniture during WWII.

After the war, in the late 1940's, he designed his many lines of furniture that made him a household name all over the world. He was a founding member of the industry's guild, the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, and was its Master for 1957-58. Ercol furniture are some of the best made furniture in the world, as Ercolani said in his biography: "...the simple chair was the outcome of very good and precise workmanship"
