This mid-century sideboard was crafted by Frystark, the Cape Town furniture brand founded in 1959 when brothers Owen and Derek Frye merged their business with G H Starck Ltd, opening a factory in Ndabeni. Frystark became one of South Africa's most recognised mid-century manufacturers before it was sold to AFCOL in the late 1960s and moved into mass production, and the brand gradually faded through the 1970s. This piece reflects the minimalist Modernist aesthetic the company was known for.
The sideboard is built in sapele mahogany with a clean, rectilinear silhouette raised on slender black metal legs. Two sliding panel doors span the full width of the piece, closing over both the left and right-hand compartments. Behind the left-hand door sits a single fixed shelf and two lined drawers, set above an open storage bay, while the right-hand side holds a single fixed shelf within its own deep compartment.
The piece has been refinished with a new satin varnish, and it shows light signs of age along some of the edges, consistent with its history and visible in the photographs.
Condition: Very good. New satin varnish finish, with some age-related wear to the edges in places.
Dimensions: 173 x 44.5 x 73 cm (h)
