The mid-century Swedish designer, Elias Svedberg, designed a variety of important furniture collections for the upmarket Swedish retailer, Nordiska Kompaniet, amongst which is this elegant birchwood side-table. The table was already designed in the late 1940's, and it is an important example of the early days of post-war Scandinavian modern design.
In 1947, Knoll became the North American distributor of Elias Svedberg's Nordiska Kompaniet furniture, and this table became known as the Knoll NK5 table. It is on display to this day in the Knoll Museum in East Greenville, Pennsylvania.
The table has no makers mark, but the fact that we sourced it from a home with two unmistakable Elias Svedberg armchairs, which was bought together with the table, left us in no doubt.
