Vintage White Peacock Chair

R 6,550.00

This white peacock chair is a real vintage treasure. It has been restored to its original glory. Broken and missing parts of the woven cane has been repaired by the expert hands of the artisans at the Tygerberg Association of the Blind. The chair came to us already painted white, and it could well be the original colour.

The origin of these chairs, known as peacock chairs, is vague, but it is accepted that it was first made in the Philippines, which is why it is sometimes referred to as the Manila chair or the Philippine chair. One source traces its origin to the Bilibid prison in Manila.

It was made world famous by several celebrities in the United States who chose to pose in the chair during publicity shots. The two most famous examples being one of the founders of the Black Panthers, Huey Newton, in the 1960's, as well as the famous erotic star from the Emmanuelle films from the seventies, Sylvia Kristel.

Condition: Restored. We have touched up the paint on the parts where new cane was woven in.

Dimensions: 109 (w) x 44 (d) x 144 cm (h) and 45 cm seat height.

The unpainted peacock chair in the pictures, is available here.
