This is a special piece of modernism. The fold-open desk was designed in Switzerland in 1928, by Mummenthaler and Meier, but it took off in popularity in die 1950's when mid-century modern sensibilities became a lifestyle in the cities of Europe and America.

This piece is from the 1950's. When closed, it looks like a regular wardrobe or cupboard, but when opened it reveals a complete desk and workspace with many shelves and drawers that can slide and adjust and little cavities for all you documents and small things. It even has a retractable lamp.

This desk remains as useful and relevant today as it was in the 1950's. It is the perfect working station for a notebook computer and it can be a complete office inside a lounge in a city apartment, since the whole thing closes with two movements.

The working surface and most of the inner parts are maple wood and the veneer on the outside is sapele mahogany, although many European sites list it as teak.

Condition: Good vintage condition, although there are some small issues. Small veneer chips on the outer edges at the back. We felt it better to leave this piece as is and not to restore it, since it has a good patina and a sense of history.

Dimensions: 53 x 82 x 113 cm (when closed) and 165 cm (w) when fully open.
