This vintage peacock chair is a real beauty. It has been restored to its original glory. Broken and missing parts of the woven cane has been repaired by the expert hands of the artisans at the Tygerberg Association of the Blind and we have matched the various original painted colours as well as we could.
The origin of the peacock chair is vague, but it is generally accepted that it was first made in the Philippines, which is why it is sometimes referred to as the Manila chair or the Phillipine chair. One source traces its origin to the Bilibid prison in Manila.
It was made world famous by several celebrities in the United States who chose to pose in the chair during publicitiy shots. The two most famous examples being one of the founders of the Black Panthers, Huey Newton,in the 1960's, as well as the famous erotic star from the Emmanuelle films from the seventies, Sylvia Kristel.
Condition: Restored. Our colour matching is not perfect, but it adds to the character of this marvelous piece.
