A rare and unique 1960's walnut finish sideboard from Harpur's Furniture Galleries. The only reference to this company that we could find was an article in the "South African Architectural Record" of July 1953, describing the role that furniture dealer, Robert S Harpur, played in bringing the "contemporary new design" to South Africa.
Harpur imported Swedish furniture for his shop in Hillbrow around 1950, and it seems like he was one of the pioneers of this style in South Africa. He also teamed up with the renowned young furniture designer, DS Vorster, who became known for his particular African style of modernism.
This unique and lovely modernist piece shows consistencies with some of Vorster's other designs of the time.
