Art Deco Rocking Chair

Regular price R 5,450.00 Sale price R 4,450.00

A rare South African chair that combines the art deco armrest style of the Chech designer Jindrich Halabala (these are imbuia, which suggests that it was made locally) with the wing back style that is centuries old. The result is a surprisingly beautiful chair. The rocker has been completely restored, from the frame to the rocking mechanism to the upholstery. The chair has been recovered in a vibrant red soft corduroy.

It is a platform rocker, which means it is not rocking on rolling sleds but on an invisible platform with a system of springs on the back of the frame. The chair sits very comfortably and the rocking motion is very smooth.

Upon stripping the chair to be re-upholstered, two layers of previous upholstery were removed, the first clearly a early 20th century brocade. Our guess is the chair could be almost a century old.

Condition: Very good.

Dimensions: 66 (w) x 72 (d) x 99 cm (h) and 42 cm seat height.
