This chair is a rather unusual mixture of art deco and the faux antique ball and claw style. They are essentially contradictory styles, since art deco was a modernist break with the past, a playful and almost rebellious statement of progress, while the use of ball and claw in 20th century furniture was a longing back to the ancient times of Queen Anne in the early 17th century. Ball and claw furniture made in South Africa in the 1950's was really a way to chase modernism out of the house and to try to bring the gravitas of history back.
This chair is almost like a joke in furniture design, so we decided to add a little baroque by covering it in a silver blue textured velvet.
