Rare Vintage 'Maralunga' Sofa by Vico Magistretti for Cassina
A sofa and armchair are available - they are priced per item.
This iconic sofa is more than 40 years old and in great condition. The 'Maralunga' is widely held to be one of the best comfortable sofa designs of the 20th century, mostly due to the adjustable angled back rest that allows for both low and high back support. The inner device is a celebrated patent that works with a bicycle chain.
Vico Magistretti was an Italian designer and architect, responsible for some iconic modernist buildings in Europe and a variety of famous furniture designs, like the 'Eclisse' lamp, the 'Oluce' lamp, and the 'Caimate' chair. He won several international awards, like the Gran Priemo at the 8th Triennale in Milan in 1948, and taught design at the Royal College of Art in London and the Domus Academy in Milan.
Magistretti drew the Maralunga Sofa for the first time in 1973 and production began the following year, in 1974. It immediately became a recognized and appreciated industrial design object both in Italy and around the world: in 1979 the Maralunga won the Compasso d’Oro award and in 1981 it became part of the MoMa collection in New York.
* As a reference, a new sofa like this will cost around R160 000 after VAT in South Africa, and vintage models sell for between R50 000 and R110 000 in the US and Europe.
Condition: The sofas have been recovered by the previous owner a few years ago, and the upholstery is still good, but not great. We offer professional re-upholstery at an additional cost. All the mechanisms are still 100%, and they are structurally sound.
