An authentic mid-century steel tanker desk, powder-coated in fire-engine red. The rubber top is the original and quite worn consistent with age and much use. It was left unrestored to preserve some of the history and character.
So-called tanker desks are sheet steel variations of the pedestal desk, which is a rectangular top resting on one or two pedestals or cabinets of stacked drawers. In the case of the steel desks, the pedestal resembles some kind of tank, and from there the name.
The first tanker desks were made in 1946 in the United States and they were rolled out of the factories up to the seventies. We estimate this one to be from the fifties. They were largely destined for state institutions like schools and police departments.
Tanker desks are decidedly mid-century, with a strong lingering aura of art deco and the Bauhaus style.
Condition: Restored but with signs of age. Look at the pictures closely.
