Marcel Breuer, the architect who pioneered mass produced tubular steel furniture in the 1920's, and Mart Stam, the architect who invented the cantilever chair, designed the first Thonet S34 chair in 1927. Most of the early S34's had a horisontal pipe that connected the top of the two back pillars. This version that we have, with independent back pillars, is also called an S34, and is seen in chairs that were produced since the 1950's.

An Italian version of the chair with the independent pillars was produced since the 1960's by the furniture manufacturer, Matteo Grassi, and it was known as the MG5. This was not a copy but produced under licence.

Are these chairs that Huisraad Modern offer originals or replicas? The truth is that we are not sure since they are not marked. What we know is that they are not produced by Matteo Grassi, since those chairs had the trademark embossed on the leather. They might be original Thonet chairs, since Thonet sometimes used a sticker to mark their products, and the stickers could have been removed. What we know is that they are top quality vintage chairs from the 1960's or early 1970's. The steel work - the bending and welds - are top quality, and the leather is very good. We price them as high-quality vintage chairs, and not as original Thonets, even though they might well be.

Condition: Good vintage. The chromed pipes have little corrosion, but there is some, and the leather has marks that came with time, but they are intact and in general very good. One leather back was torn on the seam, and it was repaired - have a look at the pictures.

Dimensions: 61 (w) xx 55 (d) x 80 cm (h) and 42 cm seat height.
