Modernism is a marvel

Being in the treasure hunting business is exciting since it is so unpredictable. At the end of some weeks, it is truly satisfying to look at the variety of pieces that drifted into our space.

The sensation of this week is the MT3 chair by Ron Arad for the Italian company Driade – it is a celebration of imagination, technology, new materials, and good living. Put that next to a humble art deco side table from the 1930’s and 1940’s, and you have two pieces at the opposite ends of the great modernist furniture boom of the 20th century.

They seem to have little in common, but there is really a golden thread between them. Of economy of design, clean lines, discipline, great materials, attention to the needs of people, and yes, of soul.

Another surprise is this little telephone table. When we closed our Gauteng operation (in the wake of Covid), an ugly little painted table got left behind. We almost threw it away. But our main wood man, Caleb Majarira, said no, let’s strip the paint off. And a wonderful solid oak emerged.

We hope you love it as much as we do.
